EF Message 5131 – Name Exceeds IRS Character Limit
EF Message 5131 appears when the combined taxpayer and spouse names exceed the IRS 35-character limit for e-filed returns.
Why This Happens
The IRS allows 35 total characters for both names combined, including:
First names
Last names
Middle names or initials
Spaces
The & symbol between names
If the total goes over 35 characters, the return cannot be e-filed.
How to Clear EF Message 5131
Option 1: Shorten Middle Names
Replace middle names with initials.

Option 2: Remove Middle Names
Delete the middle name or initial if not required.
