How to Find Out Why a Tax Return Rejected

This article explains how to check why a return was rejected in 1040-SR. You can check Client Status inside the software or in a web browser.

Check Client Status in 1040-SR

1. Open Client Status

  1. Click the Client Status icon at the top toolbar
    or
    Go to Quick Menu > Client Status.

2. Select the Client

  1. Enter the client's SSN and press Enter
    or
    Click Client List, then double-click the client.

Client Status Tabs

QuickView

Shows key information about the return:

  • IRS Center: Where the return was processed.

  • IRS Code: Accepted or Rejected.

  • Bank Date: Date the bank application was sent.

  • Bank Code: Accepted or Rejected by the bank.

  • Federal Due/Refund: Amount due or expected refund.

  • Federal Deposit: Deposit date and amount for bank product returns.

  • State Deposit: State deposit details for bank products.

  • Check # / Check Amount: Bank product check information.

  • Prep Fee: Total preparation fee.

  • E-File Fee: E-file fee charged.

  • Other Fee: Additional fees.

  • Total Fees: Total fees and Paid/Not Paid status.

Summary

Shows IRS and bank transmission details:

  • IRS Transmission Summary

  • IRS Accepted Ack Summary

  • Bank Code (bank product returns)

  • Refund Summary (deposit dates and amounts)

  • Fee Summary (bank product fees)

  • Electronic Payment Summary

  • Checks Printed

Acks

Shows all acknowledgements received.

  • IRS Acknowledgements

  • State Acknowledgements

Note: If an ack is missing, print all reports. Go to Quick Menu > E-file > Print Reports. Any menu with << must be opened and printed.

State

Shows state filing details:

  • State

  • E-file type

  • Return type (resident, non-resident, part-year)

  • Refund or amount due

  • Transmission date

  • Accepted or Rejected

  • Acceptance date

Other

Shows:

  • Secondary phone number

  • AGI

  • Total tax

  • Withholding

  • EIC

  • Refund or balance due

Also shows Return Access History, which logs each time the return was opened or changed.

Notes

Lets you enter notes about the return. This matches the notes available by right-clicking the return in Client List.

Other Client Status Buttons

Refund Status

Opens the IRS Where's My Refund? page.
Enter SSN, filing status, and refund amount.

Note: 1040-SR cannot control when the IRS issues refunds.

Print

Prints a PDF summary of Client Status information.

Go To Return

Opens the client’s return. When you exit, you return to Client Status.
